7. Though he allows for its association with "higher and finer" satisfactions, Freud claims "civilization" is incompatible with the most intense "feeling of happiness" which he identifies with "the satisfaction of a wild instinctual impulse untamed by the ego" Civilization and Its Discontents, pp. 29-30). Marx, on the other hand, identifies the highest feeling of happiness with the activities that define the highest form of "civilization" - the "realm of freedom." What differences in foundational assumptions, about "being" in general and "human being" in particular, lead to these different conclusions?
